What are Side-Emitting Panel Lights?
Side-emitting panel lights, also known as edge-lit panel lights, are thin, flat light sources that provide uniform illumination across a surface. Unlike traditional panel lights that emit light from the front face, side-emitting panels emit light from the sides. This design allows for a more even distribution of light and enables the creation of sleek, ultra-thin lighting fixtures.
Functionality and Working Principles
Light Source: Side-emitting panel lights typically employ LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) as the light source. LEDs offer several advantages, such as energy efficiency, long lifespan, and low maintenance requirements.
Light Guide Plate (LGP): The core component of a side-emitting panel light is the light guide plate. The LGP is a transparent acrylic or polycarbonate panel that receives light from the edge-mounted LEDs and guides it evenly across the entire surface area of the panel. The LGP is designed with precision-engineered patterns or microstructures on its surface, which help distribute the light uniformly.
Reflective Layers: To enhance light efficiency and prevent light loss, side-emitting panels often incorporate reflective layers. These layers, usually made of highly reflective materials, are placed on the backside or edges of the LGP. They help redirect any stray light back into the panel, ensuring optimal light output.
Diffuser Plate: A diffuser plate is positioned on top of the LGP to further distribute and scatter the light, ensuring a smooth and glare-free illumination. The diffuser plate is usually made of materials like PMMA (Polymethyl methacrylate) or PC (Polycarbonate), which offer excellent light transmittance properties.
